Newman's 'zip' paintings—vertical bands of color dividing monochrome fields—are among the most monumental and demanding works of Abstract Expressionism. 'Onement VI' sold for $43.8 million in 2013. Simultaneously sublime and confrontational, his canvases ask viewers to encounter pure color as a transcendent, almost theological experience.
