Born Romain de Tirtoff in St. Petersburg, Erté became the defining visual voice of Art Deco through 240 Harper's Bazaar covers and costumes for opera, theatre, and film. His sculptural bronzes, etchings, and serigraphs—sinuous female figures in elaborate decorative environments—are among the most collected Art Deco objects. Works appear frequently at auction across a wide price range.
