Jean Dubuffet

Dubuffet invented Art Brut—raw creation by outsiders, the untrained, asylum patients—and built his own enormous oeuvre around its anti-establishment energy. His cityscape paintings and bustling urban scenes have achieved prices above $25 million. A philosophical iconoclast who rejected all Western aesthetic conventions, he remains one of the most important and undervalued figures of postwar French art.
