Thomas Eakins

Eakins's rigorously observed portraits and sporting paintings—rowers, swimmers, boxers, surgeons—represent American Realism at its most uncompromising. Rejected in his own time for brutal honesty, he is now recognized as the greatest American painter of the 19th century. Major works command above $20 million; 'The Gross Clinic' is considered the finest American painting.
