Willem de Kooning

De Kooning's Women series—violently painted, disturbingly alive, unsettling in their refusal to resolve—and his abstract landscapes placed him at the center of the New York School. 'Interchange' sold for $300 million privately; his auction record exceeds $68 million. Born in Rotterdam, he stowed away to America in 1926 and became one of the defining figures of American modernism.
