Homer's paintings—Civil War scenes, Adirondack guides, Caribbean fishermen, Maine coastal storms—define the heroic possibilities of American genre painting. His Caribbean watercolor series command above $2 million; oil paintings regularly exceed $30 million. 'Sloop, Nassau' sold for $28.6 million in 2008. He is the pre-eminent American painter of the 19th century's second half.
