French School, late 17th Century Cavalry exercises Pen and ink and grey wash 361 x 484mm An inscription on the mount identifies the scene in this drawing thus: Disposition des deux armées rangées en Bataille, la première commandée par Monseigneur Le Duc de Bourgogne, la seconde par M. de Rosen, le 19 Septembre 1698 . Louis XIV had revived the title of the Duc de Bourgogne in 1682 for his grandson Louis, who is presumably one of the protagonists here. It is most likely that the scene shows military exercises rather than a battle, for France was not at war in 1698, the Peace of Ryswick having been signed in 1697 and the Spanish succession wars still three years away.
