Catalog summary
Emil Bizer Bizer, Emil 1881 Pforzheim - 1957 Badenweiler. Kirche von Steinenstadt. Öl auf Leinwand. Größe ca. 42 x 51,5 cm, Rahmen ca. 54 x 63 cm. Bizer, Emil 1881 Pforzheim - 1957 Badenweiler. Church of Steinenstadt. Oil on canvas. Size approx. 42 x 51.5 cm, frame approx. 54 x 63 cm. Enclosed confirmation of authenticity by Bernd Bizer, Emil Bizer's son. Emil Bizer is considered an outstanding representative of artistic modernism on the Upper Rhine. He developed his style through numerous travels and friendly contacts with other renowned artists such as Albert Haueisen, Wilhelm Trübner, Ferdinand Hodler and Karl Friedrich Zähringer, studied with Rudolf Treumann and tried his hand at various techniques in painting and printmaking. In 1912, he settled in Badenweiler, where he formed the core of a European-minded circle of artists. During the Nazi era, he continued to work there despite being banned from practising his profession. From the 1920s onwards, Bizer increasingly concentrated on landscape painting with the Markgräflerland in all its diversity as his subject matter, and in the 1930s he found his way to his typical grisailles, paintings in grey-toned blue and ochre. In 1949, together with Gerstel and Strübe, he was involved in the founding of the State Academy of Fine Arts in Freiburg, where he headed the landscape painting class and taught his students to concentrate on a few striking forms. Throughout his artistic career, Bizer took part in numerous solo and group exhibitions and many of his works are in public collections.
