Catalog summary
James Ensor Sentier Ă Groenendael circa 1889. Etching on paper, depicting a rural path near Groenendael, executed in Ensor's characteristic loose lines. The landscape is depicted with a subtle alternation of light and dark areas, with trees and shrubs along the path creating an intimate, almost introspective atmosphere. The work reflects Ensor's early interest in the Flemish landscape and is technically finely worked out. Framed James Sidney Edouard Ensor (1860 - 1949). He is considered one of the most important Belgian artists of the late 19th and early 20th century and was a key figure in the development of symbolism and expressionism. His work, which is distinguished by a unique, often grotesque and satirical character, had a great influence on later avant-garde movements, including surrealism and German expressionism. 13 x 9 cm
