Catalog summary
Jan Chalon Three delicate portraits in the style to Rembrandt. Jan Chalon was the brother of the female artiste Christina Chalon and the father-in -law of the publisher Christian Josi. Rembrandt was his great example and like his great master he developed a bold etching style always aiming towards progression, not really following the influence of his Contemporains, and averse to commercial gain. He destroyed many of his work even before it was published if it did not fits his standards. The largest one is signed bottom right left: J Chalon in F. it shows Bust of a young woman with long curly hair and wearing a feathered hat, facing front, holding her left hand against her head; In this third state the subject is completely reworked, earlier states show no hat. This circa 1790 etching is an example how the artist continuously worked to rework his subject until it was acceptable for him. , The second one is signed middle right, it shows the bust of an old man wearing a flat cap, seen in profile facing left, his chin resting on his right hand; soiled plate-edges. c.1788-1793. The smalles one shows the bust of an old man with large beard close to the work by Rembrandt. c.1788-1793 1788-1793 Three etchings with drypoint Jan Chalon (1738-1795) 0 Wurzbach 1906-11 / Niederländisches Künstler-Lexikon (undescribed) All measurements are taken on the plate mark Good impression printed with some surface tone on a bit sturdy laid paper.
