London, Leicester Galleries, Keith Vaughan: New Paintings, 1956 no. 9 New York, Durlacher Bros., Keith Vaughan: Paintings and Gouaches , 1957, no. 20 State University of Iowa, Keith Vaughan, Paintings and Gouaches , 1959 London, Matthiesen Ltd., Keith Vaughan , 25 February - 19 March 1960, no. 4 Catalogue note In the early 1950s Vaughan became increasingly aware of the importance of the painted surface as an expressive pictorial element. This manifested itself in a more painterly application with varied, directional brushstrokes and richer, more eloquent build-ups of pigment. His reduced, economical palette of slatey greys and sap greens evokes a feeling of early springtime, before the first sprouting of forest foliage. Jagged forms suggest agricultural fencing while vertical and curved forms describe tree boughs and banks of shrubbery. Gerard Hastings.
