Property from an Important Private Japanese Collection Albrecht Dürer Nuremberg 1471–1528 Adam and Eve engraving on laid paper with a Bull's Head watermark (Meder 62) 1504 a superb, early impression of the rare second state (of three), before the re-work in the tree, the darkest areas of the landscape extremely black and rich, providing an intense contrast with the luminous highlights of the foliage and figures, the finest lines in the subjects' contours printing exceptionally clearly to great sculptural effect, the central tree, the animals in the foreground and the parrot at upper left also remarkably three-dimensional sheet: 251 x 195 mm.; 9⅞ x 7⅝ in. The present impression compares favourably with the Malcolm impression of the same state at the British Museum (1895,0915.299).
