Catalog summary
Ram Kumar Falling Bird Signed in Devanagari and dated '68' lower middle and signed and dated 'Ram Kumar/ 1968' on reverse Oil on canvas 70 by 50 in. (178 by 127 cm.) Catalogue Note 'In the late 1960's Ram Kumar'sĀ paintings asssumed an abstractionist character with aĀ particular reverence for nature. Whilst on a visit to his hometown in the foothills of the Himalayas, Kumar noticed theseĀ birds that would swoop down with the utmost precision, reminding him of a missile hitting the ground, almost like a dead free fall to get to the prey.Ā Using this imagery, Kumar did not simply replicate the visible but subjected this experience to a prismatic analysis and a conceptual reframing to create The Falling Bird . The work takes on a spatial quality, a sense of flight, movement and an arial perspective as the landscape becomes its own architecture.'Ā ( Ram Kumar: A Journey Within ,Ā Vadehra Art Gallery,Ā 1996)
