The canvas has been lined with glue and the surface is stable.<br><br>The retouches are clearly visible under the ultraviolet light addressing some separation cracks in the background, a hole an inch square in the lower right background, a complex horizontal tear about four by two inches in the left side of the chin and in the collar and a five inch horizontal tear running from the center of the hairline into the background at left. In the lower right background, a paint loss an inch square has been retouched, and there are specks of retouching in the sleeve in the lower right. Remnants of old varnish are also visible here and there under the ultraviolet light. <br><br>Apart from the restoration in the chin, the face is unrestored, and the picture does have a fresh and lively feeling, despite the restorations.
