Provenance
Collection of Professor Jean-Philippe Mery, Paris (gifted by the artist in the late 1960s) Private Collection, France ___________________________________________________________________ Collection du Professeur Jean-Philippe Mery, Paris (offert par l’artiste vers la fin des années 1960) Collection particulière, France Catalogue note Untitled represents a world that is both lyrical and linked to the senses. Belonging to a series of landscapes created by the artist in the late 1960s, this painting is representative of the many visions experienced by Joseph Sima. This abstract landscape in which the sky and the earth are combined creating a hazy ensemble, is evocative of a cosmic whole that emits a sparkling glow. Untitled is evocative of a lucid dream. The work frees itself from earthly phenomena, giving way to an unknown universe. Wrapped in an aerial veil, and crossed by unrecognizable patterns, the composition shares a vague resemblance with the sky encompassed by multiple clouds. Located halfway between reality and imagination, this strange vision induces a meditative contemplation. Between science and spirituality, these illuminations are at the heart of Sima’s creative process. As Frantisek Smejkal points out, "At the end of his life, Sima attributed a great deal of importance to these illuminations, without ever failing to emphasize the materialist principle of these luminous visions" (Frantisek Smejkal, Sima, Cercle d'art, 1992, p.286). In Untitled , the landscape filled with light seems to transcend the limits of the canvas. Having previously produced stained glass windows, the artist introduces these plays of light in his compositions. In the same way as those pieces of glassware, Sima's paintings seem to absorb and refract light resulting in a range of subtle colors. "He represented light as a physical and spiritual force, a psychic reality, endowed with symbolic meaning. In the poetics of the painter, light acquires properties that are denied to it in reality: it liquefies, solidifies, crystallizes, it can also punish or elevate, scream or whisper, and shape our sensitivity" (Frantisek Smejkal, Sima, Cercle d'art, 1992, p.286) ___________________________________________________________ Untitled représente un monde à la fois sensible et lyrique.
