Catalog summary
Gerda Smit Gerda SMIT (Utrecht 1934 - Eindhoven 2004) Gerda Smit studied at the Free Academy in Eindhoven (department of graphics). She is touched by the things that happen around her and in the world. People and animals from her surroundings always appear in her work. In the dry needle technique, which Gerda Smit uses, lines are made into a metal plate with a sharp metal pen, without using an acid solution. The resulting shallow grooves with burrs create a typical velvety tone on the paper that is printed on. The colors in the print are obtained by printing the etching plate on the paper in different color runs. Without wanting to be a social indictment, her original works and etchings indicate the defenselessness of man and beast against inflicted injustice. Thus, the figures in her work are often - literally and figuratively - disempowered. Gerda's work is reminiscent of na_eve art: figurative lovely representations from which a childlike innocence radiates. Her human figures, both primitive and schematically indicated, come touchingly to life. Handsigned and numbered. Completely framed.
