Lough Gur is a place of huge archilogical importance in the history of human civilisation in Ireland. The rolling hills that surround the largest lake in county Limerick are have remains of every era if Irish civilisation from Neolithic times. Ryan paints landscapes but he is not a landscape artist. He paints an imagined world inhabited by a hybrid mythical creature. This generic almost dog-like creature has been central in his allegorical paintings for most for the past three decades. Since childhood, Ryan has always had a keen interest in zoology. In his paintings and drawings he attempts to celebrate the community between mankind and all other creatures we share this world with. Robert Ryan regularly exhibits his work throughout Ireland and has been invited to exhibit in several other countries. His most recent invitation is to exhibit with the prestigious Robilant+Voena Gallery in New York in May next. "A MYSTERIOUS VISION" will be a exhibition of international contemporary artists whose work has evidence of the legacy of Surrealism. The exhibition is one of many around the world that celebrates the centenary after the first Surrealist manifesto. After A MYSTERIOUS VISION closes in New York, it will tour to Milan in September. 57 x 65cm
